Composite Creations scoops runner-up prize in inaugural competition

Composite Creations has scooped the runner up prize in the inaugural South Devon Excellence Awards. In the hotly-contested Kitson Hutchings' award for Best New Business.

The awards are held to celebrate companies which have done outstandingly well in the past year.

Third contract for Composite Creations

Class 40 boatbuilders Composite Creations has signed its third contract. The company, which is headed by Martin Boulter, was only formed last year to build the Class 40 Fujifilm for Alex Bennett and is already working on its second boat for American sailor Michael Hennessy with a confirmed order for a third.

Composite Creations is based in South Devon, close to Class 40 designers Owen Clarke Design Group with whom Composite Creations has a close working relationship.

Martin explained: “It's very useful being based near to the designers. It is important to be able to have close communication with them.”

The company has invested in high quality female moulds and offers custom variations to the Class 40 design with the interiors bespoke to each owner's needs.

And it has been awarded a grant from Finance South West for a 75ft pre-preg oven and spray booth which will enable the business to expand further and build other classes of boat.

Boulter explained: “The Class 40 is a rapidly expanding class – many sailors are finding it is more financially viable for them compared to other classes. This oven will enable us to expand into other areas as well which is something we're keen to do.

“Being able to deliver boats on time is a big problem in the fleet, so far we are managing to buck the trend though and build the boats on schedule. It's been a great first year for us.

“It's also been especially rewarding to us to see that Fujifilm has now done around 3,000 miles with no problems.”

Bennett added: “The boat's fantastic, we've sailed more than 3,000 miles in her so far with no problems at all. I've been getting to know her over the last couple of months and can't wait for the TJV so I can really put her through her paces.”
